World heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko retained his title for a 17th time with a fifth round knockout of contender Kubrat Pulev in Hamburg on Saturday.
Klitschko had his opponent down twice in the opening round despite continuous holding, but Pulev continued to get up and fight on while looking to push the champion on the back foot and land with some heavy shots of his own.
However, despite partially rocking the Ukrainian in the first with a solid left jab, Pulev continued to get caught with Klitschko’s big shots and ultimately he made him pay for it in the fifth round as he hit the deck for the fourth time.
A crushing left hook sent the Bulgarian to the floor for the final time as Klitschko now looks ahead to continuing to defend his IBF, WBA and WBO belts while Pulev is left to regroup after his first professional loss.
