The National Rugby Championship had produced the world’s first ‘own try’ after a refereeing blunder led to North Harbour Rays forward Mitch Lewis touching down for the Sydney Stars.
North Harbour were defending their line at a ruck when Lewis broke free of the pack and placed the ball over his own try line.
Referee Ian Smith, who was unsighted, referred to the TV referee who left everybody dumbfounded when he awarded a try to the Stars.
