Own goals, as uncommon as they may be, usually offer a laugh or comic relief in a match.
They can also be heart-breaking, as most of England saw last night. Football can be a cruel and unlucky sport.
Laura Bassett’s unfortunate own-goal in stoppage time prevented the Lionesses from moving on to the Women’s World Cup final.
That goal (which you can relive below) was gut-wrenching.

7. Peter Enckleman, Aston Villa
One of the most unfortunate own goals of all time. Enckleman, the goalkeeper, missed the throw back by his teammate. He barely touched the ball, as the referee decided, making it a terrible goal to see.
