Columbus Crew’s DP proves instrumental.
Federico Higuain scored a penalty and an elegant chip to give Columbus Crew three points against a New York Red Bulls team who were missing DP Thierry Henry through injury and coach Mike Petke through suspension.
The win is the Crew’s first since their 1-0 victory against the Portland Timbers on July 7th and will give hope they can force a turnaround and perhaps a play off position.
Columbus were awarded a penalty in the first half after shoving in the box, and skipper Higuain hammered a no-nonsense finish straight down the middle into the roof of the net.
Then in the 76th minute Higuain further showcased his talent after winning the ball in his own half, playing a give-and-go and running onto a through ball from Wil Trapp into the Red Bulls half. With the Bulls’ defence cutting off his run on goal, Higuain looked up and sent a sublime chip over Robles before heading into the corner to receive applause from his delighted fans.
