Hungary 10 El Salvador 1 (World Cup, June 15th 1982)
When FIFA decided to expand the World Cup from 16 to 24 teams, El Salvador took advantage of a second qualifying place becoming available to the CONCACAF region, beating off previous tournament hosts Mexico to the runners-up spot and their place in the finals.
However, they’ll have wished they were still at home after their first match, as their leaky defence saw them battered 10-1 by former World Cup finalists Hungary, which 31 years on is still a record scoreline.
Already 3-0 down by half time, a second half hat-trick from Laszlo Kiss set them on their way to such a convincing win. El Salvador’s defence in their final two group matches, although defeats against Belgium and Argentina saw them return home pointless.
