Australia 31 American Samoa 0 (World Cup qualifier, April 22nd 2001)
Two days on from humiliating Tonga 22-0, Australia fielded a weakened side against a makeshift American Samoan outfit, although you wouldn’t have noticed from looking at the final score that the Wallabies had left their star names at home.
Although the plucky minnows held their own for the first ten minutes, within a quarter of an hour later they had picked the ball out of the net nine times. By the interval the scoreline had already reached 16 and the constant stream of goals continued after the restart, with Archie Thompson scoring a world record 13 times.
A decade on, the minnows have improved after beating Tonga and drawing with the Cook Islands in their last qualification tournament, although having no competitive fixture for two years means they sit down in 197th in the FIFA rankings.
