Jonathan Barnett has revealed that there was indeed more interest than was first let on.
A recent twist of events that has started with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez, has now been confirmed by Gareth Bale’s agent.
Bale’s representative Jonathan Barnett has revealed that there was a second club interested in signing the former Tottenham Hotspur star – widely believed to be Manchester United.
Barnett appeared on Spanish football show Jugones and has stated that negotiations between Bale, Spurs, Madrid and the unknown team were far from smooth.
The comments from Bale’s agent are as follows:
“The signing of Bale came close to falling apart. Tottenham made a bid for Bale to stay. Meetings were not always peace and love, some were harsh with disagreements.
“Bale needed a few days off so he asked permission from Tottenham [to go to Marbella]. The player spoke to no-one, he was not with anyone and he saw no-one. He’s strong, but that must have been torture for him.
“The Spanish press didn’t understand why Tottenham weren’t agreeing to the money, but if Tottenham needed money the deal would have been done the first day. Moreover, there was a club that offered more money than Real Madrid. A lot more money.
“Bale has played in the Premiership and has won many awards. To me, he’s better than Neymar.”
