Due to injury Dhoni will miss the first Test of the upcoming series with Australia and Dravid thinks choosing Kohli was a good thing for the team and player alike.
“Dhoni’s absence gives Virat the opportunity to show that he leads maybe differently,” the man known as ‘The Wall’ told ESPNcricinfo.
“I still think it’s going to be Dhoni’s side, he has been announced captain.
“It’s just a nice opportunity for Virat and a great feeling, every time you get the opportunity to lead your country in a Test match, it’s a great thrill and Virat will really enjoy that.”
Dravid also thinks Kohli is the natural successor to Dhoni in the long-term, having already skippered the one-day team and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.
Having struggled against England over the summer the 26-year-old has bounced back in recent times with good knocks against both West Indies and Sri Lanka.
However, that has been in the shorter formats of the game and Kohli will want to show he is a force to be reckoned with in the five-day game when the Indians kick things off in Australia on December 4.
