Arsenal transfer news
Aside from the fact that this seems an overly simplistic transfer rumour – “replace one speedy English attacker with another” – here’s a look at three reasons this move looks unlikely and would be a bad idea for the side Brendan Rodgers is trying to build at Anfield…
1) Inflated price
Described as a ‘contract rebel’, there is some suggestion Liverpool could sign Walcott on the cheap; this quite simply isn’t true. The England international is a key member of this Arsenal team and his contract isn’t even up until the end of next season. Sure, as time goes on his value will fall and the Gunners may be forced to accept less or risk losing him for free, but until that happens you’re surely looking at £20m or more for the player. Arsenal won’t want to lose a big name to a rival, no matter what his contract situation is – just look at how they got £24m out of Manchester United for Robin van Persie.
