The Broncos are expected to announce Bennett’s return later this afternoon.
Current Brisbane Broncos coach Anthony Griffin has reportedly been told to look for a new job as the club plans for the return of Wayne Bennett.
Bennett appears set to return to the Broncos after six years away, with the club board set to meet on Tuesday to finalise his return.
Griffin still has one year left to run on his contract, but has reportedly been told that his services will no longer be required in 2015.
Although Griffin has the support of the players and chief executive Paul White, senior board members have been working to lure the Broncos’ foundation coach back to the club.
Players were called to a meeting on Monday morning at the club’s Red Hill base, and the announcement of Bennett’s return is expected to be made in the late afternoon.
The 64-year-old won six titles in 21 years with the Broncos before leaving in 2008 to join St. George Illawarra.
He was linked to a return to Brisbane in 2011, however he took a higher $1.4 million per year deal at current club Newcastle Knights.
More to come…
