The 19-year-old England international has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last year or so, becoming a key player for club and country after some fantastic performances.
A pacey and skillful goalscorer, Sterling does resemble Overmars in his all-round style of play, and Rooney believes he has the potential to reach the level of the Dutchman, who was a Premier League star during his time with the Gunners.
“I sat down with him (Sterling) before the World Cup and showed him videos of Marc Overmars,” Rooney said. “He reminds me of him.
“He’s a young lad, but the potential he has shown is incredible. In fact, he has the potential to be as good as Overmars.
“A fantastic player – you saw that last season and again, already, at the start of this one. He’ll be a massive player for us for the next 10-15 years and, unfortunately, also for Liverpool.”
