Man United’s Ashley Young set for three-year contract after derby heroics
The Red Devils are on a roll after a series of thrilling wins over table-topping rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Manchester City during their best winning run of the season.
United will travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday looking for a seventh successive victory.
And whilst Rooney doesn’t talk up his side’s title chances, he still thinks they have a good chance of making things very difficult for the Premier League champions-elect.
“We are confident going to Chelsea,” he told The Sun.
“We’re in a good run of form and have beaten some good teams. It is a big test for us. They are top of the league and it is always tough at Stamford Bridge.
“They’re in a commanding position — we just have to try and win our games and finish as high as we can.”
Chelsea currently have a seven-point game at the top of the Premier League – and a game in hand – over second placed Arsenal. United sit just one behind the Gunners, an eight-point difference with Chelsea.
A win at Stamford Bridge will be the crowning jewel on an unexpected Man United resurgence after a stop-start first campaign under Louis van Gaal.
And Rooney believes the club is now heading in the right direction under the Dutchman.
“We are still a work in progress, still learning.
“We are playing nice football and winning games. But we have to continue that to the end of the season.”
