The left-back spent three unsuccessful years at Aston Villa before a brief spell at Western Sydney Wanderers.
Wellington Phoenix have signed defender Reece Caira from A-League rivals Western Sydney Wanderers.
The Young Socceroo has joined up with the New Zealand-based club ahead of the new A-League season after impressing during a trial at the Westpac Stadium following a brief stay with the Wanderers last term.
Caira made two appearances for the Tony Popovic’s side after being released from Premier League side Aston Villa, where he had spent the previous three years in their junior development program.
And the 20-year-old, who can play at left-back or in midfield, admits he is delighted to join Phoenix after struggling to make an impression in Sydney.
“I got to see England and got a close look at how the professionals worked,” Caira explained to Sportal. “It put me in a good position when I was released and went back to Australia.
“I played in all the Under-20 World Cup qualifying games but the success Wanderers had in their first season made it hard to break into the side so I asked permission to trial with the Phoenix to see if I could get more first-team football.
“They agreed I could go to Wellington and I’m really excited to be joining the club.”
