Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has dropped a massive hint that youngster Calum Chambers could be a big part of his plans in central defence, report the Express, with the Frenchman lavishing praise on Chambers following the Gunners’ emphatic 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City.
Chambers started alongside Laurent Koscielny in the heart of defence, before playing alongside Nacho Monreal after the break, and was one of the stand-out players as the Gunners crushed the resistance of an under-strength City side, with Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud grabbing the goals in a comfortable victory.
Despite their impressive display in attack, however, it was Chambers who Wenger singled out for praise following the match:
“Calum Chambers did not play there by coincidence – I have seen the qualities he has shown today. He had never played alongside Nacho Monreal before and he was outstanding.”
“For a 19 year-old, he had an outstanding performance today. He was very impressive.”
With captain Thomas Vermaelen having confirmed a move to Barcelona yesterday, the expectation is that Wenger will go out and sign a new centre back to challenge established pairing Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, but the performances of Chambers in the middle are threatening to change his manager’s thinking.
