The Toffees have been in incredible form recently under Roberto Martinez, winning three of their last four matches, and duly took the lead through Kevin Mirallas.
The Belgian winger ran onto a fine knockdown from his compatriot Romelu Lukaku – who of course played for the Baggies on loan last season – and finished confidently beyond Ben Foster.
Everton were on top, with West Brom struggling to create decent chances despite their possession, but were unable to extend their lead.
After the break, Pepe Mel, managing his first game in full charge of the side, brought the home team back into the game with more emphasis on attack.
Victor Anichebe came on to assist Nicolas Anelka up front, but it was a defender who found the equaliser.
Diego Lugano stooped to head in from James Morrison’s cross, but the drama didn’t end there.
Sylvain Distin had a goal correctly ruled out for offside when he turned in Gareth Barry’s cross from close range.
West Brom move four points clear of the relegation zone, while Everton miss the chance to overtake Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League positions.
