In a see-sawing affair at Cbus Stadium, Richards’ brilliant field goal proved the ultimate difference between the two sides.
The Titans opened the scoring early when James Roberts pounced on Daniel Mortimer’s kick. But the Tigers started to get into their groove and only a professional foul from Ryan James stopped them from scoring initially.
James was sent into the sin-bin for this act.
Wests then managed to find a way over, Richards getting the try.
James soon came back on to the field and make amends with a bulldozing try to put the Gold Coast in front. Ten minutes into the second half and it was the Tigers who pegged it back, Richards claiming his second try.
A Richards penalty then evened the scores up, and the visitors moved in front with another try.
Gold Coast wasn’t done yet though, and fulback William Zillman was then smashed by Mitchell Moses as he ran the ball up. Moses was very lucky to stay on the field and not be sent to the sin-bin.
With 11 minutes left the Titans levelled the scores again after Roberts notched his second try of the night. The game seemed set for golden point extra-time, until Richards answered his team’s call.
His field goal from 32 metres out was perfect and the Tigers had their first win of 2015 in dramatic circumstances.
