According to the Independent, the Argentinian international has ‘one foot in Paris’ and there is no doubt that French champions PSG would benefit from his arrival.
However, if he were to leave the Premier League after just one season, it would deny United fans the opportunity to see what the former Real Madrid star can really offer.
Injuries, tactical issues and problems off the pitch ensured that he had a miserable end to the campaign, but it would be a disservice to his undeniable talent to write him off completely from being able to succeed under Van Gaal.
Di Maria had 24 assists and 15 goals in his last season for Madrid before leaving the Spanish capital, and, although he had his troubles at the Bernabeu, he was widely regarded as one of the top players in the world.
His tireless and energetic performances always suggested that he would make the transition to the Premier League successfully, but the consistent quality just hasn’t been there to match it so far.
This isn’t the first time that Di Maria has faced adversity, and it may even involve tweaking his role in the team in order to get the best out of him. A switch under Carlo Ancelotti saw him play a pivotal role in their march towards a Champions League triumph.
If any coach is smart enough to find a better tactical fit then it would be Van Gaal, and in turn it would come as no surprise if the Argentinian ace bounces back with an impressive season full of goals and assists that end up seeing him considered for individual honours next May.
It hasn’t been an easy journey for Di Maria, and it isn’t the first time that a big-name, big-money player has arrived at Old Trafford and struggled. Furthermore, he probably won’t be the last.
However, he has the relentless work ethic and talent to succeed, and it is hoped that there is no premature end to life in Manchester which would in turn deny Premier League fans an opportunity to see him turn things around.
Goals such as those below were few and far between, but an injury-free and confident Di Maria can make all the difference in more ways than one for a side looking to challenge for a Premier League title next season.
