Djokovic, the current world number 1, is on fine form and won the Australian open earlier this year. ‘The Serbinator’ will be hoping to repeat his 2011 Wimbledon victory, and will fancy his chances after key rival Rafael Nadal was knocked out surprisingly by unknown Steve Darcis on Monday.
Mayer has previously reached number 18 in the world, but has only ever made the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam. The German’s unorthodox style of play could disrupt his illustrious opponent, but don’t be surprised to see a straight sets victory for Djokovic.
These two have met on four previous occasions, with Djokovic recording easy straight sets victories in each. Strangely, in 2012 they met at Wimbledon in the same round, with the Serbian recording an easy victory 6-4, 6-1, 6-4.
The last time Djokovic played in a tournament was in the French Open in June, where he lost to Rafael Nadal 3-2 in the semi-final, with a tight last set finishing 9-7 to Nadal. The Spaniard went on to win the tournament.
Mayer has seem some good form recently, winning two of his previous three matches. However, in his last Grand Slam – the French Open – he was knocked out in the First round by Denis Istomin, retiring through injury when 2-1 up. The German is past his prime, but is hoping to rekindle the fire he once had.
Prediction: Djokovic to win comfortably in straight sets.
