Worker was at the bottom of an elevator shaft when he was tragically killed
A construction worker was killed Tuesday in an accident at the site of the new $1.3 billion 49ers stadium, the NFL team said in a statement.
The worker, who was not immediately named, was at the bottom of an elevator shaft when he was killed.
“The 49ers organization was deeply saddened to learn this morning of the news at the construction site,” the 49ers said in a statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and co-workers affected by this tragedy. The 49ers family has lost a teammate today.”
The new stadium, in the Silicon Valley city of Santa Clara, is slated to open in 2014 and is called Levi’s Stadium thanks to a sponsorship deal with iconic Bay Area clothing manufacturer Levi Strauss and Company, which will pay $220 million over two decades to have its name on the venue.
The 68,500-seat stadium has already been tabbed to host the Super Bowl in 2016.
