Goalkeeper and defence:
Manuel Neuer (Germany) – One of the best goalkeepers in the world at the moment, the Bayern Munich star is an obvious candidate to be first choice here, with Argentina’s number one Sergio Romero not even the current number one for his club AS Monaco.
Philipp Lahm (Germany) – Usually played in midfield these days, but Philipp Lahm is arguably the best right-back in the world, and just edges another top class player here in Manchester City’s Pablo Zabaleta, who has been great for Argentina at this World Cup.
Marcos Rojo (Argentina) – The only Argentine in this back four, Sporting Lisbon defender Marcos Rojo has performed very impressively at left-back in this tournament and will no doubt continue to be linked with the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea on the back of these displays.
Per Mertesacker (Germany) – A solid performer for Arsenal this season, the vastly experienced Per Mertesacker is also a key player for his national side, despite plenty of competition for places in Germany’s back four.
Mats Hummels (Germany) – One of the best central defenders in Europe, Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels is an obvious candidate ahead of Argentina’s options in that position to start here. As well as being rock solid at the back, Hummels has two goals so far in this World Cup.
