Defender has never heard of Bayern Munich star.
Iceland defender Ragnar Sigurdsson has admitted he has never heard of Croatia striker Mario Mandzukic.
Sigurdsson will be tasked with containing the Bayern Munich superstar in Friday’s crucial World Cup play-off first leg in Iceland but says he does not follow German football.
“I do not know who Mandzukic is,” Sigurdsson told Croatian source Vecernji.hr.
“No, I’m not kidding. Is this the one who plays at Bayern? I’ve never seen him before. I do not follow German football, but I’ve heard that he’s a good player.”
Mandzukic scored in the Champions League final last season and has been a crucial part of the success of a squad that is widely considered the best on the planet at present.
But Sigurdsson, 27, who plays for Champions League outfit FC Copenhagen, is confident he can handle the striker.
“I’ve never feared anyone so I’m not afraid of Croatia.
“I have stage fright before the game, but as soon as it starts, I forget about it and give my best. I am confident that we can win, and it would be great if we did not concede a goal,” added the centre-half.
