Tomas Kalas, the Czech centre back who was so impressive for Chelsea in their win at Anfield towards the end of the Premier League season, is set for a season-long loan deal at FC Cologne, according to the Daily Star.
After signing from hometown club Sigma Olomouc in 2011, Kalas has failed to make much of an impression at Chelsea, but did impress during a loan spell with the Blues’ unofficial feeder club Vitesse Arnhem in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Kalas remains highly rated at Stamford Bridge, but the Blues remain mindful of hampering Kalas’ progress with a lack of first team football, especially considering the impending arrival of Kurt Zouma at the club following his purchase from St. Etienne.
With Zouma likely to take the place of David Luiz in Jose Mourinho’s squad, it makes sense for Kalas to be given the opportunity to get a year’s worth of football under his belt in a more competitive league than the Eredivisie.
Cologne were promoted back to the Bundesliga this season, a feat which sparked jubilant scenes of celebration in the city and also a pitch invasion. They are the former club of Arsenal star Lukas Podolski.
