History of the Formula 1 Qatar Grand Prix

The Qatar Grand Prix has been part of the Formula One World Championship calendar since 2021 when it replaced the cancelled Australian Grand Prix due to the COVID-19 pandemic. F1 took a one-year hiatus due to the 2022 World Cup and returned to the calendar in 2023 with a 10-year contract. The 2023 Qatar Grand Prix was where Max Verstappen clinched his third F1 World Championship after finishing P2 in the Saturday Sprint race. This was also McLaren driver Oscar Piastri’s first Sprint Race win.

The main event in 2023 became infamous for its hot conditions causing multiple issues for drivers. Esteban Ocon vomited in his helmet while driving and Logan Sargeant had to retire due to heatstroke and dehydration. Lance Stroll was seen struggling to get out of his Aston Martin at the end of the race and Williams’ Alex Albon had to visit the medical centre due to heat exposure. George Russell complained that he was close to losing consciousness during the race and Verstappen, Leclerc, and Norris all agreed it was the most physically exhausting race of their careers.

The 2025 Qatar Grand Prix will feature the sixth and final Sprint Race of the season. Tickets for Saturday may be as in demand as the feature race on Sunday, so secure your tickets to the 2025 Qatar Grand Prix now from Fanatix.

2024 Qatar Grand Prix Summary

George Russell started in pole position but lost the lead to Max Verstappen after a move at Turn 1. Lando Norris was set for his 13th podium of the year, but due to failing to slow under double-waved yellow flags, he was given a 10-second stop-and-go penalty and finished P10. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri completed the podium, behind the winner Max Verstappen, with polesitter Russell finishing P4.
